Choghadiya Panchang is an Indian Astrology that is based on an auspicious time guide which is termed muhurat. The word Choghadiya is a combination of two different words, Chaw, and ghadi, in which Chaw stands for “consisting of four”, while ghadi stands for 24 minutes. Hence, the duration of every choghadiya is approximately 96 minutes. Choghadiya today divides the daytime and nighttime into eight equal periods. The daytime choghadiya starts with the sunrise and ends with the sunset. Similarly, the night choghadiya begins with the sunset and ends with the sunrise.

The choghadiya are further divided into two groups that are good choghadiya and bad choghadiya. The good choghadiya include char, labh, shubh, and Amrit while the bad choghadiya include Kaal, rog, and udveg. When carrying out any good work, people look for the good choghadiya and avoid the bad choghadiya.

What is Vaar vela in Choghadiya?

In aaj ka choghadiya, Vaar vela and kaal vela are observed in the day time. Vaar Vela and Kaal vela are the times when people avoid carrying out auspicious work during the daytime. Vaar Vela and Kaal vela are the hours or choghadiyas when the good choghadiyas overlap with the unfavorable choghadiyas. Such choghadiyas or muhurta are avoided as the malefic planets have a strong negative influence. Hence, they have the ability to conquer the good muhurta. Vaar vela occur in every choghadiyas, however, the kaal vela occurs only in Kaal time, which is ruled by the Saturn planet.

What is Kaal Ratri in Choghadiya?

As per today’s choghadiya, Kaal Ratri is the laabh choghadiya that takes place during the nighttime and is ruled by the Mercury planet. This period is also considered inauspicious and is widely avoided for any good work. Even if Kaal Ratri coincides with any other auspicious or good choghadiya, it is highly advised to avoid or postpone any important work during Kaal Ratri.

What is the difference between Choghadiya and Shubh Muhurat?

Aaj na choghadiya (Today’s Choghadiya in Gujarati) provides information about the shubh muhurat or auspicious time of the day. Choghadiya is observed every day which divides the day into eight parts that can be grouped into ashubh and shubh muhurats.

Whereas, shubh muhurat is the time that is derived after the calculations of the planetary positions. People check the shubh muhurat for carrying out various auspicious tasks like pujas, marriages, inaugurations, engagements, shop openings, and much more. While finding out the shubh muhurat, there are chances, that there would be various shubh muhurats in a month, however, there wouldn’t be any shubh muhurat in a single day.

How are the choghadiyas calculated?

The din ka choghadiya or daytime choghadiya and nighttime choghadiya are calculated by sharing the day and night into eight equivalent parts. Out of the seven choghadiyas, every six choghadiyas obtain one division. While the seventh choghadiya obtains two divisions. And every choghadiya has approximately four ghadis.

For example, the sequence of the choghadiyas for Sunday would be different compared to the sequence of the choghadiyas on the rest days of the week. But it would be the same every Sunday.
